Another documentary in this year’s pool of movies, "Chasing Ice," directed by Jeff Orlowski, looks into the ever-growing problem of global warming. The film follows photographer James Balog as he travels the world taking pictures of receding glaciers. In an effort to photograph climate change, Balog successfully raises awareness of the topic.
Tracing the steps of Balog’s project, Extreme Ice Survey (EIS), "Chasing Ice" shows the audience Balog’s struggle in his love for frozen water. Wonderful cinematography is used to present the glory of these massive glaciers being researched and photographed. As he sets up dozens of cameras on three different continents, Balog realizes his dream of capturing this change.
This film definitely leaves the audience thinking. Stunning facts are presented about the amount of ice that we are losing on this earth. Not only facts are utilized, though. Through Balog’s photos, the audience can directly connect with the fact that this problem is real by seeing global warming in action.
It is definitely a wake-up call for audiences on the effects of humans on the Earth. It is not just another lecture telling you to beware of the dangers headed our way: the flooding, the weather disasters, the loss of ice and animals. It is an eye-opening look into how these things are actually happening now, not in the future.
With the goal to raise awareness, "Chasing Ice" succeeds. This is a movie that I can see playing on the Discovery Channel when all the hubbub of Sundance is over. Very well made, this movie met all my expectations and more.
