"Bones Brigade: An Autobiography," directed by Stacy Peralta, is a stunning recap on the beginnings of modern-day skateboarding. The Bones Brigade was set up as a team of amateur riders in the 1980’s by the director himself in order to bring new life to a dying hobby. The kids who joined this new group were to be the ones who invented modern techniques and led the way into the world of professional shredding.
Anyone, from the pro skateboarder to the plain film junkie can relate to this film. Not only was it an awe-inspiring story to see these young boys transform the sport and themselves into something spectacular, but also a very insightful piece.
With commentary from the main riders of the time including Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Mike McGill, Lance Mountain, and Rodney Mullen, to vintage video from the eighties, every shot captured the audience’s attention.
The amount of footage that was presented was astounding. It provided a connection to this past life of skateboarding that couldn’t have been done in any other fashion. Ranging from homemade videos and photos to professional competition footage, all of the shots were masterfully blended into the story of this era.
Although this documentary is about skateboarding’s epic rise to fame, it has much more to offer. It is a truly inspiring story about the hardships of competition, fame, and opposition juxtaposed with the desire, drive, and talent within the skateboarding community. Everything was masterly blended into the two hour film.
There were constant transitions between various footage and people talking. This allowed the audience plenty to look at, which held their attention very well. The interviews were fantastic and well put together. Chronologically, the story laid out in front of you made sense, no matter your history on the topic. The overall quality was astounding.
To be honest, I can’t wait till it comes out on DVD. It is a movie that can be watched over and over again. It is a connection to the past, an inspiration, a history, and highly recommended.
