Key Club prepares for next school year

Last Friday, Park City High School’s Key Club made the drive to Boise, Idaho to attend the annual Utah/Idaho District Convention (DCON), which had a Harry Potter theme this year.
“DCON’s purpose is for the new board and members to learn and experience Key Club,” said Key Club’s current Co-President Mary Lamphier.
Prostart finishes fifth in cooking competition

On March 7 the Prostart class competed in a statewide cooking competition at the Hilton Hotel in Salt Lake City. Teams of four attempted to cook a three-course meal in one hour with limited space and no kitchen appliances. Park City took fifth in a highly competitive field of 30 schools.
Park City’s team of four Prostart students was comprised of Beth McIntire, Arthur Whiting, Alex Hall, and Juan Perez. They were selected from a competition the class held earlier in the year.
Chef Joey Pesner from the Zermatt Resort mentored the students and facilitated their practices.
FBLA fundraiser beginning soon

Park City High School’s club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), is commencing its stock market game fundraiser this week. The game is an online simulation that follows the actual fluctuations of real stocks where participants can buy, sell, and trade stocks of their choice.
Key Club hosts March of Dimes fundraiser

Key Club began its annual March of Dimes project yesterday, Tuesday March 15th. Jugs are set up in the lunch room where students and faculty will be able to donate money throughout the month of March. The collected funds will be given to the March of Dimes organization, which helps support babies born prematurely, with birth defects, and sicknesses.
“[The national] Key Club specifies March of Dimes as one of their three core activities,” said Key Club Advisor and Scholarship Counselor Nancy Michalko, “so clubs across the country are participating in this fundraiser.”
Art students featured in state art show

On Saturday, March 10, AP Studio Art students Jessica Ercanbrack and Ali Mitchell traveled to Springville, Utah for the annual All-State Art Show awards ceremony.
Mitchell, whose work was selected for a second consecutive year, was awarded the Board of Trustees Award for her oil painting.
“Last year I received a congressional award, but it was very impersonal,” said Mitchell. “This year the director of the museum came to talk to me and give me advice. It was a valuable conversation.”
Students will attend math competition

The state math competition will be held on March 14 at Utah State University. Utah students in grades 7 – 12 will compete by taking a test that includes concepts from algebra and statistics.
The competition is held at a Utah college or university each year on Pi day, which derives its name from 3.14, the value of the mathematical constant Pi. The University of Utah, Utah Valley University, and Weber State University have hosted past competitions.
“This is the first time we’ve tested at Utah State,” said College Algebra and trigonometry teacher Donna Hall.
University of Utah's Meet an Inventor night

On Thursday March 1, Park City High School students were given the opportunity to attend Meet an Inventor Night at the University of Utah. Ed Mulick’s AP Environmental Science and AP Biology classes earned extra credit for attending the event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Students walked around and look at displays and student presentations.
PCHS hosts district science fair

Students of all ages gathered at Park City High School on Tuesday for the district science fair. Ninth graders from Treasure Mountain presented their projects during the morning session from 9 to 11 AM. Elementary students from Trailside, Parley’s, Jeremy Ranch, and McPolin presented their projects in the afternoon from noon until about 2:30 PM.
All ninth grade Honors Biology students were required to participate in the science fair as a graded project. Many students felt that making the science fair a requirement made the process “stressful” and “overblown.”
School board meets to discuss March issues

On Tuesday February 28th, the Park City School Board met for their monthly session to go over issues and proposals for the month of March. Lisa Kirchenheiter was absent, but the remainder of the board was in attendance.
Monthly updates were given followed by a district recognition for the Special Education departments throughout the Park City School District including the Learning Center. Individual students were also recognized for their achievements in the community and also in school.
Park City Dance Academy participates in "Will Dance For Kids" competition this weekend

On the second and third of March, the Park City Dance Academy will be participating in an state competition, "Will Dance For Kids." This competition will benefit the Utah Food Bank by the sale of raffle tickets sold through each individual dancer and academy. “Each raffle ticket is a dollar and all individual dancers are selling them. All the proceeds go to the Utah Food Bank. The grand prize if your ticket is drawn is two round-trip, JetBlue tickets to anywhere in the world,” said Park City Dance Academy dancer Isabel Reback.
