Reading Fiend

The number one reason I am excited for summer is to read.  Yes, the no school is a bonus, along with the weather and vacationing, but reading is my life.  During the school year, the only class you would read anything but a textbook in is English.  What sucks is that you read required novels, which only turn out to be interesting if you’re extremely lucky.  So, all year long I have been compiling a list of the books I have stumbled upon and so helplessly not been able to read.  The amount of free time to read outside books during school is slim to none.  Right now, the list is made up of th

Prom is just like the horror movie

Senior prom: it should be the highlight of my high school; at least that’s what I’m told in all the movies.  Sure I got my dress months ago, and my shoes not that far behind, so yes, I am prepared.  I don’t have to pay for tickets or dinner; my date will cover that.  I even have a place to sleep over with all my besties afterwards.  Seems all fine and dandy, doesn’t it?  Well, true, it was, until twenty people joined my group.  What started out as a nice, small group of six turned into Godzilla.  Finding a place to get ready, a place to take pictures, and even a restaurant to eat at that wi

Bringing Home a Track Meet

A monumental occasion is occurring this week. It’s not Prom, but along with prom a home track meet happens once every year. Even this modest average is reduced by years with heavy spring snows. There are numerous home football games and home basketball games every year, but there is only one home track meet. Apparently, however, the student body cannot do math.

This is Not a Communist Manifesto

Several people have recently labeled me as a socialist. They probably were driven to this conclusion by my outspoken cries in AP Government for equal access to food, shelter, and basic healthcare for all citizens in our country. I like to point out that capitalism has no problem with denying these things to hard-working people.

And here we are again

Returning to school after spring break is not good.  Being a senior, I have officially lost all motivation to do anything.  Instead of all the AP prep that I should be doing, I have resorted to prom shopping, going to the Miner Film Festival (which was AMAZING), wasting time with friends, and lots of eating.  I’m hoping I can keep my grades up seeing as even though I am accepted to college they can always take back their offer.  This may seem stressful, when I write it, it is, but when it comes down to it, I am more relaxed than I’ve been all year.  Seems like a contradiction to me, but I’m

The Right Way to Write

There is a lot of bad writing going around these days. Some people think blogs and social media, mediums that compress statements into extremely brief and fractured updates, are responsible for the drop in articulate people. But length has never been a virtue of good writing. Teachers don't measure our essays, they grade them. Conversely, concision will always be the goal of people concered with clear, powerful expression. Maybe no one cares. But there is still a lot of money available for a good book.

Spreading the message is key

Most of the student body is in a state of total uproar at the moment with the whole budget cuts. Several students attended the Town Hall meeting that was held at the school on Tuesday, and followed their movement by creating a Facebook page called "Save the Teachers". Last night, everyone who is a student at PCHS was added to the page to view the comments and goals of the creators.

I don't have a life.

I just want to say how I feel like I no longer have a life. I have been out of town the past three weekends in a row, due to both baseball and key club convention. My friends have forgotten that I exist. Good news is im leaving YET AGAIN this weekend over spring break to visit the Univeristy of Oregon, which I'm most likely not going to attend next year. And then when I get back not one of my girl friends will be in town. Looks like I'm going to have to hang out with the boys all week. Lucky me...

Dress code, smesh code

For schools to have a dress code is admirable.  Educational facilities such as PCHS need to represent their community.  We do this by rules in our agendas that tell us what we can and cannot wear.  These regulations have never been too extreme and most are reasonable enough to be accepted by a majority of the student body.  BUT, accepted is different than following.  Now that spring and summer have started to show their colors, students are pulling out the smaller clothes.  The thing is, even though there are short shorts up the wazoo on girls around this time, administration is not crackin

AP Classes really that important?

As a junior, approaching the time to be applying to colleges and starting the whole process, I really wonder what AP classes really do for you.  After taking two this year and am planning to four my senior year, I really question whether taking rigorous classes and then waiting for a small number to tell me whether the hard work actually counted is even worth it.  I can definitely see how taking AP classes will better prepare you for harder college classes but does the score actually matter in the scheme of things?  To me, not really.
